Is Using Oregano Oil On The Face A Good Idea? How Can You Use Oregano Oil On Your Face?

Oregano oil for the face.

It is quite obvious to have some concerns about using an essential oil on your face and especially oregano oil. We are quite aware of the potency of essential oils and how strong they can be.  We are always faced with warnings for using essential oils with caution and respect. Now, we are forced to have second thoughts in using essential oils especially when it comes to the point where we need to use them on delicate areas of our body. Our face is one part of the body with reflex, we will first protect in times of danger. We won’t attempt to deliberately apply an essential oil that can cause some burn on it.

The truth is;

Oregano oil can burn so bad if not used properly.  The last place we would want to experience any burns is on our face. Despite the fact that oregano oil is all-natural, it can still be harmful if not used with care and respect. I am not trying to discourage anyone from using oregano oil but it is very important on how you are looking forward to using oregano oil.

Well, if you have to use oregano oil on your skin and especially on your face then you must know the proper recommendations on using oregano oil. You should know how much oregano oil to use and how you can use the oil on your face to reap the most benefits you seek.

As you may already know,

Oregano oil is highly used today for its outstanding health benefits and healing power. Oregano oil has been used by ancient Chinese traditional healers for thousands of years to fight against many health issues. Today, much research has been done to back the claims of the health benefits of oregano oil.

Oregano oil has been used to fight against numerous skin disorders like eczema, ringworms, rashes, fungal infections, aging, and even facial issues like acne.

Oregano oil is an antifungal, antiparasitic, anti-allergic, antibacterial antiviral, and antioxidant which explains why the oil cannot leave you unattended with your health issues.

What to consider before using oregano oil on the face

First of all, before you put anything on your face you need to really understand the components of the product. Oregano oil is indeed natural and chemical-free and no solvents are used in the distillation process which makes it highly potent. Oregano is constituted of two active ingredients which make the oil highly potent and the reason for all its far-reaching health benefits. Carvacrol and thymol cover over 90% of the percentage of the oil. These ingredients are responsible for the reason why oregano oil is widely used today and the reason why the oil is so potent and strong to use. Carvacrol alone is known to cover over 60% – 83% in the concentration of the oil. These ingredients are known to be a substitute for phenol which is also known to be corrosive to tissue. This is the main reason why oregano oil must be diluted before use.

Oregano oil also contains some other ingredients which highly favor facial use like Rasmarinic Acid which helps to fight against damages and allergy attacks, Beta-caryophyllin which is known to inhibit inflammation,  vitamins A, C, and E.

Secondly, oregano oil is only very effective if it is highly potent. It is always recommended to use oregano oil with a high level of carvacrol like between 75% and above 80%. Only with this high level of potency and concentration can it be fully beneficial health-wise.  In certain situations, oregano oil can carry a concentration of about 83% of carvacrol which makes it very strong to use and not without diluting the oil with a carrier oil. This makes it very important especially when we are seeking to use the oil on delicate parts of the body like the face.

It is of prime importance to make sure you are not allergic to oregano oil. Oregano is a member of the Lamiaceae family of the plant. This means if you are allergic to plants of this family then you should avoid the use of oregano. Plants in this family class are mint, sage, basil, and marjoram. You can easily undertake a patch test on a small area on the body to see how the oil will react with you before going ahead to apply on your face.

If you are required to take oregano oil internally like in cases of chronic Acne, eczema, which requires to boost your immune system and fight against the bacteria and microbes from within. You must consider not to use oregano if you are;

Diabetic.

Oregano oil is known to reduce blood sugar level which can get much lower than recommended when taking medications for diabetes

Pregnant and Nursing Mothers;

Pregnant and nursing mothers are advised to stay away from oregano oil. Oregano oil can cause miscarriage and slow the production of milk for nursing mothers

If you are taking blood-thinning medications;

if you are taking anti coagulating medicines, it is advisable to avoid oregano oil because oregano oil facilitates the flow of blood in the system.

Above all, it is important to seek the consent of a professional health practitioner or your doctor before using oregano oil in any way.

How To Use Oregano Oil On Face.

Using oregano oil on the face can be a good idea when facing some skin issues which has spread right to the face. As mentioned above, remember to take a patch test to see how the oil can react with you and to avoid any adverse reaction. A patch test can be done and wait for about 24 hours before actual use.

There are several ways you can use oregano oil on the face but it will greatly depend on the issue or problem you are trying to address. Majority of the time, people use oregano oil on the face for acne. But it is common to see people using oregano oil on the face for conditions such as eczema, ringworms, cold sores.

It is very important to use a carrier oil of your choice to dilute oregano oil before any use. If you are using oregano oil for the first time I will advise you to start with smaller doses of say 1% of concentration to at least 5% of a carrier oil. You can later increase the dose if need be.

Using oregano oil on the face for Acne can be achieved by mixing about 2-3 drops of oregano oil with a tablespoon of a carrier oil of your choice and use a cotton ball to apply the mixture on the pimples. This can be done about 2 – 3 times a day for about a week or more but not more than 2 weeks.

If you have an oily face, using a carrier oil cannot be a suitable idea and shouldn’t be applying an oily mixture on the face. In this case, you can use a water solution. Put a few drops of oregano oil in half a glass of water and use your cotton ball to deep in the solution and apply gently on the pimples.

Also, a steam solution can also be used from time to time by mixing about 5-7 drops of oregano oil in a bowl of hot water and place the bowl close to the face and let the steam settle on the face and dry off. This process is often used for cold, cough, eczema, ringworms, and many other facial issues. You can use a towel over your head to avoid the steam from escaping.

If you are required to take oregano oil internally, You can mix 2-3 drops in a glass of water and drink. The taste might not be one of your favorites but you can mix the oil in a glass of juice or milk and drink internally 2-3 times daily.

For other skin and face issues, you can just mix oregano oil as indicated above and if applicable to the skin condition you are dealing with. Mix with a carrier oil of your choice and apply it to the affected area for about 2 – 3 times daily.

Some side effects when using oregano oil on the face.

As you apply oregano oil on your face, you will experience a tingling and slight burning sensation in the area. This is a normal feeling when using oregano oil on the skin. You should not panic or worry in any way. If the situation goes beyond causing burn and redness, you should reduce the concentration or quantity of oregano oil being used per mixture.

If the situation persists and you are experiencing some adverse reactions, then you might be allergic to the oil and you must stop using the oil immediately.

In case you are required to take oregano oil internally, you might experience some stomach upset as your system will resist when using the oil for the first time. You do not need to panic as your system will get used to the oil after a few uses.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your great explanation. I have a question, would I be able to dilute oregano oil with my moisturizing face cream?

      It is very important to dilute oregano oil with purely pressed extracts from seeds of plants also known as vegetable oils due to their nature and characteristics. They blend and complement oregano in a perfect way.

    Hi,

    I applied oregano oil (not essential oil) on my face and have been experiencing moderate burn and redness that lasts about 5-10 mins. Is this normal? I’m hesitant to apply daily…

    Also, will the burn and redness reduce the more I apply?

    thanks in advance

      Try to reduce the concentration and try the solution in other areas like under the armpit to check how it reacts with you before using the solution to sensitive areas like the face. If you are allergic to mint, then you are probably allergic to Oregano.
