Here is what you may not know;

Over 90 percent of people are attacked with cold sores at least once in a lifetime. Repeated cases of cold sores with American adults have been at a 40 percent rate.

What are cold sores?

Cold sores or commonly known as fever blisters, is an uncomfortable and painful infection that appears in the form of small swollen blisters. They are normally seen on the lips or around the outer mouth area. Cold sores can also be seen in other areas of the body like the cheeks, fingers, and nose. The cause is attributed to the Herpes Simplex virus, particularly the HSV-1 which is also known as oral herpes. Over 80 percent of adults are dealing with the virus.

Most often, people turn to mistake cold sores for canker sores which are also called Aphthous ulcers or better still aphthous stomatitis. However, canker sores are not contagious and usually seen within the inner lip of the mouth and concerns only the mucous membrane.

Cold sores will normally start as a blister. They later form a crust over time which will in turn break and drain creating a yellow blemish crater. At this time a new skin can be seen growing underneath.

Cold sores are inflamed open blisters which can last for 7 days and in certain conditions up to weeks. During this time these blisters are contagious as they are considered as viral infections. At this point, they can be easily spread to other parts of the body like the eyes or even genitals, which is not likely for some cases. They can as well spread among people through direct physical contact with an infected person. This can be through kissing, sharing a drink, sharing towels, toothbrushes, or even eating utensils.

The name given to the spreading of cold sores is autoinoculation and with its viral nature, it often causes a lesion to emerge as it spreads. This is why it is very important to “quarantine” the cold sores

Best ways to Quarantine Cold sores

It is of prime importance, if you are dealing with cold sores, to be able to manage the infection and providing fewer opportunities for the cold sores to spread to other parts of the body. You, first of all, can’t support it on your lips, imagine it spreading to your hands, eyes, fingers, and even to the genitals. Also, you need to keep them quarantined in other not to spread them to other people around you. Always remember cold sores are contagious and a viral infection.

Try your best to make the uninvited guest stay lonely if you want them to leave. And believe me, they are at best when left alone.

Firstly, Touching it with your fingers or other parts of the body is a bad idea.

The HSV virus is active when comes to contact with body fluids. Touching it especially when it is oozing will help spread the virus even more and to other parts of the body. Any other thing that comes in contact with the cold sores will need immediate sanitization or discarded. The virus will survive anywhere so far as it is moist and warm.

Sanitize eating utensils after use.

Always remember to wash the spoons, glasses, and plates you use thoroughly after using them. Touching them after in contact with the virus will increase the likely hood of spreading them to the other part of the body unknowingly. If possible, stick to just one plate, spoon, glass in every meal.

Always use applicators to apply medication.

When treating your cold sores it is better to use applicators like alcohol wipes,  q-tips, or cotton balls. You should always remember to use them once, put them in a bin plastic and move them straight to the trash. You should warn others around you to avoid direct contact with the applicators to avoid spreading and infecting them. Always remember to wash your hands after completing every treatment.

Discard multi-used items you have been in contact with.

After a successful outbreak, which means, you must have finally emerged victorious, try to throw away some multi-used items you must have been in contact with. Items like toothbrushes, chopsticks, lipsticks. If this is not done, your victory might be short-lift and best described as playing a tug of war with the virus.

What triggers cold sores

Too much stress

If you are under stress, it can cause the virus to become active. Too much stress will provide an opportunity for viruses to take over our bodies. In this case, outbreaks will be common. Try to relax your mind and do things that make you less stressed. You can use a warm bath with some Epsom salt in the water. Adding few drops of lavender essential oil in the water will greatly help for stress. Go for a gentle massage once in a while,  go for a daily matcha tea or chamomile tea which are all great for relaxing and calming the body.

Weak immune system

If your system is worn down, your body can’t fight viruses. This can be considered as one of the main factors for outbreaks. Normally we live with both bad and good bacteria within us but with a strong immune system, the outbreaks are minimal as our bodies are normally fighting these viruses and bacteria. All we need is just support the body in this battle by providing the best things the body needs and avoid toxins and heavy metals. Toxins and heavy metals provide hiding places for the virus. With a weak immune system, this bacteria will have the green light for an outbreak.

Other triggers can include

Exposure to excess sunlight

Exposing the body to excessive sunlight helps to promote an outbreak due to the burn.

Fatigue

Fatigue can also cause the virus to be active. More sleep and rest is always required to reduce fatigue.

Menstruation can also be a contributing factor and can trigger cold sores

Other infections

Infections like fever, flu, cold can expose the body to other viruses and can easily trigger cold sores

Alcohol can also expose the system to an outbreak.

Signs and symptoms of cold sores

Some signs and symptoms of cold sores can include an itching and burning or tingling during the early stages around the lips. Blisters filled with small fluids are seen around the border area or outside edge of the lips. They can also be seen around the nose and cheeks. As the blisters merge they may burst and leaving shallow open sores which may cause oozing and a crust over. Fever, frequent headaches, nausea, some pain, and swelling in the mouth is also common. You might experience some sore throat and swollen glands. Most commonly, you will always feel dehydrated.

Using Oil of oregano for cold sores

Cold Sores natural treatment

There are several ways you can use oregano oil for cold sores. But do not forget, oregano oil is considered as hot oils which means you must have to dilute oregano oil before using it. It is advisable to take light doses of oregano oil if you are using oregano oil for the first time. Observe how the oil will react with your body. Oregano oil can burn or cause irritations to sensitive skin so it is wise to always start with smaller doses. If you are using oregano for the first time you can start with a 1% mixture and observe how it reacts to you. You must consult your doctor or any professional health practitioner before taking the oil of oregano.

Nursing and pregnant women

are not advised to take oregano oil. Oregano oil is known to interact with other medications and you must consult the advice of a professional health practitioner before taking oregano. Oregano oil can lower sugar levels and it is important for patients dealing with diabetes to talk with their doctors before using oregano oils.

If you are allergic to the Lamiaceae plant family

you must stay away from using oregano oil. This class of plants may include mint, lavender, basil, sage, hyssop, and marjoram.

Many recommend mixing oregano oil with water to treat cold sores but from my experience water can’t dilute oregano oil properly. Simply because water and oil repel each other and can’t blend properly. For the case of cold sores, you are using the oil on the body. Since water and oregano oil can’t blend properly you risk a chance of dapping a high concentration of oregano oil on the body. This won’t go very well with sensitive skins. Most especially if you are using oregano oil for the first time.

On the other hand, many people have used oregano oil with water to experience healing from cold sores. In this case, you can mix 1 drop of oregano oil with a tablespoon of water. Use a q-tip to dap on the affected area. This can be done around 4 to 5 times a day.

You can also blend oregano oil with 2 drops of lemon, tea tree and jojoba oil and dap on the affected area with a q-tip  4 – 5 times a day. Jojoba oil will enable the blend to absorb very easily.

For an effective treatment, you may need to take oregano oil internally. You can mix oregano oil with coconut oil and ingest. The mixture can be 2-3 drops with coconut oil in an empty gelatin capsule and drink. Oregano oil also exists in capsule forms for a more convenient intake. You must not exceed 600mg a day and can take them in 2 to 3 doses daily. Avoid taking oregano oil on an empty stomach.

Oregano can only be used for a short period of time.  This can be a period of about 14 days. Most importantly, always look for the 100% organic therapeutic grade of oregano essential oil. It must be FDA approved, unfiltered and 100% pure.

How to prevent cold sores

Cold sores are in general not serious, that cannot be the case with people experiencing depressed immune systems. This can be through medications or disorders. After dealing with an outbreak, it is possible for subsequent outbreaks since the herpes virus is buried in the cells and can be dormant for a very long time.

To better prevent cold sores you must kill the virus from within and not just at the surface. This means attacking the HSV virus right down to the roots.

Here is the good news;

You can use one stone to shoot two birds. Oregano oil can not only deal with your cold sores but can as well take a much greater adventure to treat the Herpes virus in your system. Dabbing the oregano oil on the cold sores will help for just that outbreak.  But carrying a full body detox with oregano oil, releasing all heavy metals and toxins in your body will help in eliminating the herpes virus hiding in your blood vessels.  Eventually, no future outbreaks and you can sleep at night knowing fully well you are free from the HSV virus.

Are you thinking about how that is possible?

If your thoughts run that way, then I am quite sure you are not familiar with carvacrol, one of the active ingredients in oregano oil. Carvacrol is specialized in attacking the root of a virus.  Carvacrol attacks the cell membrane of the herpes virus and makes it permeable.  Exposing the virus to the presence of origanum heacleoticum L., another component of oregano oil known for destroying resistant viruses.
