The frequent question of what doses or usage can bring the best healing experience.

Many others think since oregano oil is an all-natural product and feel it can be used care-free or without concerns about any repercussions.

However, you are so correct, if you are thinking oregano is an all-natural product. But, if you are thinking you can use the oil without proper care since it is natural, then you are making a mistake. It is commonplace to find people asking if one can even overdose with a natural product.

I will try my best to make you understand why considering to use oregano oil with proper care and taking the right doses for oregano oil is very necessary. The various ways you can use oregano oil for a rewarding health benefit. How you can start using oregano oil for the first time and for the best outcome.  Also, how you can use oregano oil regularly to maintain a healthy life.

Why You Should Use Oregano Oil With Much Care.

How much oregano oil to take

Oregano oil is considered a “hot” oil which implies it can burn or irritate the body if not properly used. This can generally be attributed to the content of oregano oil.  The main active compounds of oregano are Carvacrol and Thymol which are known substitutes of Phenol considered to be corrosive to tissue.

Just Carvacrol and Thymol constitute over 90% of the oil’s content making it highly potent and very difficult to use without precautions. This explains why it is highly recommended to always dilute oregano oil before any use.

The effectiveness of oregano oil is greatly attributed to its active ingredients thymol and carvacrol. Oregano oil found with less than 60% of carvacrol is considered less effective and with weak healing power. Leaving us, fans of oregano oil to the choice of always going for oregano oil with high carvacrol levels. The higher the carvacrol level the more careful we need to be in using the oil and to make sure the right doses for our concerns are used.

Some other important things to note before using oregano oil.

It is very important to talk to your doctor or a professional health practitioner for advice before using oregano oil. Oregano oil is known to interact with other drugs such as medication for diabetes. Diabetes patients are advised to avoid the use of oregano as it causes lower blood sugar levels. Also, oregano oil is not to be used when taking blood-thinning medications. It can make the blood thinner as oregano helps to facilitate the flow of blood in the system.

Oregano oil can cause allergic reactions especially to people who are allergic to the Lamiaceae family of plants which may include Mint, Sage, Marjoram, and Basil. If you are allergic to these plants it is advisable to abstain from using oregano oil.

If you are pregnant or a nursing mother, It is also very important to avoid the use of oregano.

How to use oregano oil

Oregano oil can be used for a wide variety of ailments and the only way to reap the most benefit out of this versatile natural treatment is by using the oil with proper precaution and care. It is advisable to always start using oregano oil with smaller doses and to make sure you are not allergic to Oregano. I always recommend doing a patch test on a small area of your body when using oregano oil for the first time. My recommendation for using oregano oil for the first time internally is to start with very small doses of say 1% potency of oregano to over a tablespoon of a carrier oil in a mixture. And you can then later increase the dose if need be.

It is also very important to dilute oregano oil before use with a carrier oil of your choice. Carrier oils may include; Virgin Coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, Jojoba Oil.

Using Oregano oil externally

Fresh oregano

We are sometimes faced with some irritating illnesses or bacteria attacks on our body which needs immediate attention.  There exist a wide number of diseases that require oregano to be used externally and on our body. Some examples can be Acne, Eczema, Rashes or skin disorders, Nail fungus, Warts, Dandruff, and many more.

Using oregano oil externally greatly depends on what issue you are trying to address. Either way of using oregano oil will differ from the disease or illness you are dealing with. But it is very important to take oregano internally even when dealing with an external issue to fight the virus from within.

Using oregano oil on the body

We can mix oregano oil and apply it on the body directly for skin diseases we might be dealing with. It is very important to apply only to infected areas. You can mix up to 3-6 drops of oregano oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil of your choice to apply on the body depending on the condition of the illness you are trying to treat. For quicker results, you can apply a mixture 3-4 times a day. It is important to always start with smaller doses for observation and how it can react with your body.  You can start with a 1/10 mixture or 1 drop of oregano to a tablespoon of a carrier oil of your choice and observe.  A patch test is also an alternative method to check on how the oil will react with you. You can then increase the dosage once you are sure the oil reacts well with your body.

Using Oregano oil with a water solution.

Oregano can be used in a water solution especially when dealing with nail fungus. You can drop about 10-12 drops of oregano oil in a bowl of warm water and steep your feet in the bowl for about 10 – 15 minutes. Water solutions can be used 2-3 times a day for quick results. You can also make an insect repellent spray with oregano water solution. You can as well use a water solution to clean the floor and other surfaces in the house.

Ingesting Oregano Oil.

Oregano oil is widely used to fight a number of viruses and bacterias right deep in our bloodstreams.  An example can be Herpes, Parasites, cold sores, complete detox, and even aging. Knowing how much of oregano oil to ingest is very important because taking the oil too much can cause some problems and an irritating health condition. You can drink oregano oil orally for much better results in treating even skin disorders.  You can mix 2-3 drops with a carrier oil of your choice and place under the tongue.

You can mix 2-3 drops of oregano oil with a glass of water and drink internally. You can always increase the dose if need be. I must admit the taste might not be the most favorite but you can mix with a favorite juice of your choice and drink internally.

There exist oregano capsules which makes it easier to take internally. It is advisable to not exceed 600mg of oregano oil in one day. You can take 200mg per dose 3 times a day.

You can make your own capsules easily at home by filling oregano oil mixed with a carrier oil into empty gelatin capsules and take internally.

Using Oregano Oil through steam or vaporized

Using oregano oil

Oregano oil can be used as steam to fight against cold and flu, sinuses, cough, and even purifying the atmosphere in the house. For cold, you can use some hot water mixed in a bowl and place closer to the face with a towel over your head to prevent steam escape.  You can practice the steam inhalation for 5-10 minutes 2 times a day.

You can diffuse oregano oil in an air diffuser or vaporizer.  You can mix about 6 drops of oregano oil in your diffuser and diffuse for about 2 hours before bedtime.

Using Oregano Oil for Children

It is highly recommended to be extra cautious when administering oregano oil for children. Children below the age of 5 years should not be given oregano oil internally. Children before a year old should not be given oregano oil internally or even externally as their skin is still tender and soft.

For these children, between a year old to 5 years old, you can mix oregano oil in very small doses like 1 is to 5 portions of oregano to a carrier oil respectively. You can apply on the sole of the feet or the lower part of the spine close to the hips. For ear infections, you can apply the mixture on the outer areas of the ear and massage to enable a gentle penetration. You can apply to the Preauricular and Postauricular areas. Never apply oregano oil directly in the ears no matter the age of the individual.

Children above 5 years old and up to about 10 years old, you can give a single drop of oregano oil in a glass of water, juice, or milk. Children above 10 years can take 2 drops of oregano in a full glass of water, juice, or milk. For external use, you can mix up to 2 drops with a tablespoon of any suitable carrier oil.

Close observation is required when administering oregano oil to children. And to make sure the oil is not reacting negatively with the child.

It is very important to know that oregano oil is not intended for long use. You can use oregano oil for up to 10-14 days max and for children 7-10 days max. You can always resume after a month or two to continue using the oil for an everyday health benefit. Always remember to take a break and resume again after some time.

Hello, thank you for the informative article on oil of oregano. My question is why do you have to stop taking oregano oil after 10-14 days? Why can you not take 1-2 drops daily for longer periods? I can’t seem to find the reason for needing to stop it anywhere on Google searches. Thank you kindly

The reason is that the distillation process of the oil makes it very concentrated and highly potent. Taking it for a long period of time can cause an adverse reaction to the system. The oil works best only in small doses and in excess due to its concentration levels. You need some time to flush the excess in the body and resume the oil again. The bottle doesn’t explain how many times a day I should take. Can you please explain? Thanks!

The standard dose for oregano is about 2-3 drops in a glass of water or with a tablespoon of a carrier oil.

The %1 dilution rate would be 4 drops to one tablespoon of carrier oil, or 9 drops for 2 tables spoons of oil. could I take that amount 2 to 3 times a day for a short time to treat an infection? Say 2 weeks. That’d be anywhere from 12 to 27 drops even though it’s diluted.

Hello Alex, have you used oregano oil before? 9 drops of oregano oil for 2 tablespoons of essential oil is considered high for me. I normally take 2-3 drops mixed with a tablespoon of carrier oil. To determine the dilution rate, you need to work with your oregano oil bottle size. 1% for a 5ml bottle will be 1 drop of oregano oil mixed with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. 1% for a 10ml bottle will be 2 drops of oregano oil mixed with 2 tablespoons of essential oil.

I used this before mostly when I feel like I’m coming down with something. I never read up on the dosage until now. I’ve taken it for covid-19 and it worked in one day and my lungs were very wet. I never get sick. Last flue was in 2002. This works well on bugs that make your nose, throat, lungs, stomach sick. I took 30,000mg at a time the night I feel something coming and 6000mg a day for 5 days. I never had any negative reaction from such a high dose. This stuff is a godsend! You don’t need to kill your guts with antibiotics anymore.
